Four Simple Steps To Ensure Your Redness-Prone Skin Is Less Dehydrated This Summer

We’re leading into the warmer months in Australia and so it’s important we keep in mind how the hot weather naturally impacts our skin. Warmer temperatures will strip your skin of moisture causing your skin to become dehydrated - when the protective upper layer of your skin lacks in moisture. Heat can become your skin’s worst enemy - it can dry out the skin, cause burns and cause breakouts. Furthermore, if your skin is dehydrated, your skin will become dry, flaky, dull and will make your fine lines and wrinkles become more noticeable. To ensure your skin doesn’t become dehydrated this summer, we have put together the below 4 simple steps to follow to give your skin the moisture it needs to get through the upcoming harsh Australian Summer.
Be sure to exfoliate throughout the week using a gentle exfoliant
Throughout the warmer months, it’s even more important to be exfoliating multiple times throughout the week. Exfoliating buffs away dead skin cells which means when you’re applying hydrating products afterwards, such as a hydrating serum or moisturiser, your skin absorbs more of this. Given your skin will be more temperamental and sensitive during the warmer weather, a gentle exfoliant based on fruit enzymes is recommended.

Our Redness Reducing Niacinamide Serum contains Papaya which is widely regarded as a beautiful fruit enzyme and the most gentle approach to exfoliating, lightly buffing away dead skin cells. Once you have used this serum, your skin will have a stronger ability to absorb hydrating ingredients such as our Sleep With Me Hydrating Gel Mask or Green Tea Infused Hydrating Moisturiser, as both contains vegan hyaluronic acid (an incredibly hydrating ingredient) which will penetrate deeper into the skin to maintain moisture levels to combat the sun which otherwise works to strip your skin of moisture.

Make moisturising morning and night an absolute non-negotiable:
Applying moisturiser morning and night will help to keep the moisture levels within your skin up to standard when the hot weather will be doing everything in it’s nature to strip your skin of water. When selecting a moisturiser to use, particularly in the warmer weather, we advise making sure it is noncomedogenic, in other words, a moisturiser that does not include ingredients which are known to clog pores. Extreme temperatures in heat as experienced in Australian Summers combined with moisturisers that clog your pores will make your skin prone to breakouts.

Our Anti Redness Bundle includes the Green Tea Infused Hydrating Moisturiser which is a great option all year around but especially in the warmer weather as it is packed with vegan hyaluronic acid - an incredibly hydrating ingredient which has the ability to adjust how much moisture your skin absorbs based on the humidity.

It also includes our Redness Reducing Niacinamide Serum (mentioned above) as well as our top selling Anti Redness Cream Cleanser, packed with natural hydrating anti-inflammatory ingredients to hydrate the skin and relieve any inflammation.

My skin has come so far, before I found Ava society my combination skin was extremely dry/oily, dehydrated and super red and sensitive. Now it is silky smooth, extremely hydrated and glowly and my redness has improved so much, it’s the best it’s been in such a long time and in turn my confidence has gone up so much that I’m finally starting to feel comfortable wearing little to no make up a lot of the time. I highly recommend ." - Toni

Hydration is important at night as much it is during the day
During Summer, particularly in climates such as Australia, it is absolutely recommended to be mindful to apply more hydration and moisture to your skincare regime to combat this harsh weather even when at night.

The Sleep With Me Hydrating Gel Mask is our absolute saviour for this Summer. Consider this a big drink of water for your skin. Incredibly hydrating and cooling, this gel-based mask contains vegan hyaluronic acid and a plant-based peptide to provide even the most dehydrated skin with moisture.

This mask works best if you apply before bed and sleep with overnight. This way, the beautiful, natural, hydrating ingredients literally melt into your skin as you sleep. We can’t even begin to describe how fresh and rejuvenated your skin feels when you wake up the next morning. It has also been formulated specifically for sensitive skin meaning no there are no hidden nasties and provides a gentle and natural approach to hydrating your skin without the fear of inflammation.

Apply sunscreen at all times - even if you don’t plan to go outside

Without the diligent use of sunscreen, the damaging effects of UV rays will combat the beneficial ingredients you’re applying though your skincare regime. Applying sunscreen needs to be a non-negotiable step all year-round even if it’s cloudy or if you’re spending most of your day indoors. Particularly in the warmer months, we recommend reaching for a hydrating everyday SPF. We also recommend applying sunscreen as a separate step in your skincare routine and not reaching for a moisturiser that has SPF included. Using a separate sunscreen ensures you’re getting an adequate amount of protection. Applying a moisturiser that has SPF included gives a false assumption that your skin is protected from UV rays, when in reality we need to be applying half a teaspoon of sunscreen just for your face alone (as the recommended amount is 2mg of product per square centimetre of skin), which is less than the amount of moisturiser the average person applies each day. Applying a hydrating sunscreen and a hydrating moisturiser separately will ensure you’re not only protected from the sun but also be providing adequate levels of moisture to avoid dehydration during Summer.

Following these four steps during Summer will help your skin avoid dehydration when the sun and heat are doing everything it can to strip your skin of moisture. We have our AVA SOCIETY live chat available between 7AM - Midnight (Sydney time) 7 days a week where you can speak directly to one of our skin specialists for further information should you have any other questions.
